The Sphinx Remembers
The magnificent Mount Auburn Sphinx is a memorial to Union soldiers in the Civil War. It was carved by sculptor Martin Milmore from a single block of granite transported from Hallowell, Maine. It was commissioned by cemetery founder Jacob Bigelow and completed in 1872. It is part of the African-American Heritage Trail.
On its base is the following inscription:
American Union Preserved
African Slavery Destroyed
By the Uprising of a Great People
By the Blood of Fallen Heroes
